Apple has confirmed they have officially blocked MySpace from all Apple Store demo computers. While this really isn’t much of a surprise, it brings up the question of who will be next to be blocked.
Nearly 2 million people visit Apple stores every week,” the statement read. “We want to provide everyone a chance to test-drive a Mac, so we are no longer offering access to MySpace in our stores.” According to an Apple representative, the News Corp.-owned MySpace is the only site that has been blocked.
Many of the stores had already set up machines that could only access Apple approved sites prior to the block so they were always available for demonstrations by Apple Store employees. I was in the San Francisco Apple Store last week, mid-day during the week, and the computers were all in use by young people, none of which were there to test out the computers, but were all messing around for hours at a time. We waited for nearly 45 minutes before we could get access to a computer. While I don’t think the MySpace ban will slow down the teen traffic, it will be interesting to see what further bans we will see in attempt to open up public computers.

1I think that its wrong to have blocked myspace on the mac stores it wasnt doing any harm to their people/customers.Actully more kids came in to look at the computers and then tols their parents about it inwhich the parents got persuaded into buying one.Plus teh kids are getting angry and there gonna make a bad image on the Mac. Store.

2I think Apple is right to block Myspace in its stores. Kids that come in and hog all the laptops in the store front prevent potential customers from actually getting on the units to try them out.
I was considering buying a MacBook but couldn’t get near one in Apple’s London store! If I had got on it and had a play… who knows I might have made an impulse purchase.
Apple – scruffy students don’t buy many computers. Look for the middle-aged, punters with big wallets!
