Apple announced today that they recently sold their 100 millionth iPod, I had no idea they had sold that many. Granted, I am personally responsible for about 10 of them, but come on!
• 1987 since the first iPod was introduced = 50,327 iPods sold per day since launch
• Estimated US Population gain per day: 7,855 people - Apple is selling 7 iPods for every person added to the US Population daily
“At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.”
I purchased my first iPod, a 10G second generation iPod December 21, 2002. I used it every day for 4 years, until I received an iPod Video for Christmas. The dang thing still works perfectly to this day. The day I purchased my first iPod, in the Orlando Apple store, it was the only iPod sold that day, just a few days Christmas. Who could have guessed the iPod would have turned into a cultural phenomenon.
The iPod has also sparked an unprecedented ecosystem of over 4,000 accessories made specifically for the iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker systems, and more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer iPod connectivity.
Congrats to Apple. I can tell you right now, the next 100 Million won’t take another 5+ years.

1…I remember when the iPod was first introduced, someone wrote how rediculous the idea seemed to have so much storage space “just” for music. He predicted a flop, and advised Apple instead to marked the iPod as a portable, light-weight harddisk.
Guess he was wrong
My iPod 60gig just got stolen, but having seen the demo of the iPhone, with the flipping cover art, I will wait for the next gen iPod before I buy one again. The screen on the current video iPod is just too damn small to make it fun.
