Google Calendar

While Google Calendar isn’t complete when it comes to online calendars, you know that Google will continue to add features to it to make it complete. There are plenty of hidden features already available, and one of my favorites is the ability to get reminders sent to me on my cell phone.

Receive reminders on your cell phone

Google Calendar has a setting that allows you to indicate how you want your reminders received. I prefer via SMS on my cell phone. To enable this option, go to Settings -> Notifications and scroll down to the “Notify my on my cell phone” area. First step, you need to validate your cell phone number. Just put in your phone number and carrier, and hit “Send Verification Code”. You should immediately receive a text message from Google with a verification code. Just type in your code and finish the set up. You can then choose which type of notifications you want to receive on your phone. I just want event reminders sent to me. Remember, you reminders can be for anything from an important job interview, a weekly meeting or to remind you that the latest episode of LOST is starting in 10 minutes.

Request parts of your Google Calendar to be sent to your cell phone

There are times when I am without internet access, but I need to know what I have going on the next day or later that day. Once you have verified your phone as outlined above, there are a few tricks you can use to get Google to text you what you want:

Text day to code 48368 - you will receive back your daily agenda for the current day.

Text nday to code 48368 - you will receive your events for the next day.

Text next to code 48368 - you will receive your next upcoming event.

Geeky things like this is what makes Google applications worth using.
